Antique / vintage Scandinavian enameled sterling silver earrings:
~ Shell shaped design with intricate scallops, ridges, and lines
~ Very fine guilloche or engine turned details
~ Shimmery pearl white opaque enamel
~ Made by the famous and highly collectible Nils Elvik / Elvik & Company from Norway - Nils Elvik was the patriarch and first of a long dynasty of silversmiths spanning several generations. Nils was a former student of Aksel Holmsen (1904-1907) where he honed his enameling skills. He very much emulated his works and there are striking similarities in both artisans' pieces. In 1911, Nils earned his master's certificate and opened his workshop "Nils M. Elvik Silver and Enamel Factory" - where fine enamel pieces were elevated and emphasized. Elvik products appeared as early as the very late 1800's, although the businesses and/or marks were not registered until 1941. They are very desirable and sought after pieces, especially in nice condition.
~ Ready and waiting for your ears, collection, and/or gift giving
ESTIMATED AGE OR ERA = True original vintage pieces - guessing 1930's to 1950's in age - based only on the style of clip on backs. They could honestly be older or a bit more modern as the company produced such timeless designs and production spanned many decades
METAL AND/OR MATERIAL = Sterling silver with shimmery pearl white enamel - Clip on backs look to be more of a brass or brass toned material. The silver metal as a whole looks to have a slight gold toned glow - wash/ plating or vermeil finish
CLOSURE/CLASP = Clip on backs - both in good working order
MARKS = The top back sides are stamped 925S (denoting the 925/1000 sterling silver content) and a capital E in a cloud shaped cartouche or mark. That is both the personal mark of Nils Elvik and the company mark of his Elvik & Company
MEASUREMENTS = Each is aprox 3/4" x 3/4"
US RING SIZE = x
WEIGHT = 7.1 grams together on my scale
CONDITION = Great condition for the age - no damage or quirks to mention. The enamel work is as flawless as it gets and the clip on hardware is in good working order.
Please view & enlarge all photographs to closely inspect fine details and to determine the amount of patina, and/or wear. Most older pieces by nature normally have some degree of both and, unless severe, aren't considered damaged. I will do my best to note anything glaring or distracting. Utilize the scroll arrows beside the photos to allow yourself the opportunity to view them all. Pictures normally speak louder than words and individuals also interpret characteristics differently.
