Vintage 1930's "Frosted" Dragon's Breath / Saphiret art glass mini pin:

~ Triple wow - Captivating saphiret coloring, Dragons Breath art glass ripple and fire effect AND two toned pink candy stripe swirl accents is the frosting on this proverbial cake. Any one of these qualities are getting harder to find in antique or vintage jewelry - add two and you have a stand out piece .... all three I have only seen one other time in all of my jewelry loving and collecting history.

~ This ultra-rare mini or micro pin brooch features the described above specialty art glass rhinestone in an oval cabochon shape

~ Mounted in a cute little patented gold toned or gold plated metal setting with a beaded border and open back setting to really let this stone dazzle and glow

~ When viewing from the top - this appears to have a Dragons Breath ripple or fire effect - but in a saphiret color scheme

~ From the side view - layered construction is evident with with a top layer of clear glass over the dragons breath / saphiret bottom layer

~ It is this top clear layer that contains the fantastic pink swirl overlay - it is all internal and can't be felt from the outside of the pin at all. Very cool

~ Upon examining the flat back side from the reverse - a glowing firey orange to pink iridescent glass with a crackle texture or pattern

~ Different and exotic from each and every angle - flashes, fire, glow, new colors and combinations emerge with every twist and turn of this one of kind piece

~ I pictured this laying on my hand for reference and to show what it would look like should one want to mount it in a ring. The thought crossed my mind - but I am such a purist and preservationist that I just don't have the heart to tamper with such a scarce beauty in fantastic condition.

Ready and waiting for your lapel, scarf, outfit, special day, collection or gift giving - you will love this!

AGE OR ERA: True antique / vintage jewelry item - guessing 1930's based on the patent date alone. It is very likely that this was an older antique stone even then, either new old stock or re-set / repurposed into a modern 1930's mounting at that time. The art glass stone is most likely European in origin, more specifically Czech / Czechoslovakian

MARKINGS: Patent number on the reverse side attributes this setting - design by Frank Farnham - pat applied for in 1935 and granted in 1937 - see photo

METAL / MATERIAL: Metal body looks to have a gold plating or finish and is non-magnetic. Could possibly be sterling silver, as I see some wear through near the solder points in the back side and a silver toned metal peeking out.

CLASP / CLOSURE: Adorably tiny little roll over safety clasp

MEASUREMENTS: Brooch is aprox 18.5 mm long x 13.7 mm wide. Stone is about 16 mm x 11 mm

ANECDOTAL, METAPHYSICAL, HISTORY &/or LORE: Rare saphiret glass stones were primarily, if not only, made in Gablonz, Czechoslovakia in the mid 1800's. The unmistakable unique rosy pink to brick red brown and blue color combination was created by mixing actual real melted gold into sapphire colored glass. Because these stones are glass, they are rarely found set in precious metal. They were quite often set in brass. Production of this true saphiret glass was halted around the turn of the century due to the fact that it was no longer cost effective as the price of gold had increased in value. So, by default most jewelry containing them is considered either Victorian, Edwardian, or Arts & Crafts in era. Later attempts were made to reproduce the unique look and those stones are called sappharine and experienced a surge in mid-century high end jewelry, circa 1940's 1950's and 1960's.
