ANECDOTAL, METAPHYSICAL, HISTORY &/or LORE: Block printing has been used in India since at least the 12th century, and the method itself is thought to have originated from China and dates to over 2,000 years old. The oldest actual Indian cotton block print examples or fragments were excavated at various sites in Egypt, near Cairo and the oldest mention in history of block printed fabrics dates back to the Indus Valley civilization, circa 3500 to 1300 BC

Fascinatingly, different types of dye and patterns can be attributed to regions of India, and can even used as identifiers of sorts.

No information on the history of block printing in India is complete without mentioning the Mughals. The heyday of hand block printing came during the reign of the Mughal Empire (1526-1857). They enjoyed an overabundance of textiles, which was a prestigious status symbol at that time. They were often stamped with elaborate patterns and exotic colors. Their influence remains strong, even today in modern fabric stamping
