HISTORY, PROVENANCE, ANECDOTAL, METAPHYSICAL, SYMBOLISM &/or LORE: The Aksel Holmsen jewelry brand began in 1904, when he opened a small workshop in Sandefjord, Norway. Before opening his own workshop, Holmsen studied jewelry for many years. In 1889 he began working for the Norwegian silversmith David Andersen as an apprentice in Oslo. There he studied filigree and the art of enamel work. After completing his studies in 1901, he continued to work for David Andersen until 1904.
As a multi-talented craftsman and businessman, he became a successful major supplier of enamel and silver jewelry all over the world. Most of his gilded silverware with enamelled guilloche patterns contain a modernist aesthetic. In 1950 Holmsen retired and his son Ivar, (who had been with the company since 1942), took over. In 1962 Aksel Holmsen died, and his company filed for bankruptcy in 1971.
