HISTORY, PROVENANCE, ANECDOTAL, METAPHYSICAL, SYMBOLISM &/or LORE: A charm bracelet by definition is a type of bracelet which carries personal jeweled ornaments or "charms", such as decorative pendants or trinkets. The charms usually carry personal or sentimental attachment or meaning to the owner. History records the earliest charms were made from shells, animal-bones and clay. Charms of gems, rocks, and wood followed shortly. The first charm bracelets were worn by Assyrians, Babylonians, Persians, and Hittites and began appearing from 600 – 400 BC. The wearing of "good luck" charms may have begun as a form of amulet or talisman to ward off evil spirits or bad luck. Queen Victoria wore charm bracelets that started a fashion trend among the European noble classes. In 1889, Tiffany and Co. introduced their first charm bracelet - a link bracelet with a single heart dangling from it, now an iconic symbol for Tiffany. Despite the Great Depression, during the 1920s and 1930s platinum and diamonds were introduced to charm bracelet manufacturing. And in the 1940's soldiers returning home after World War II brought trinkets made by craftsmen local to the area where they were stationed, trench and folk art made with found and materials on hand and sweetheart jewelry that often contained charms. American teens in the 1950s and 1960s collected charms to record the special events in their lives. Charm bracelets remain as popular as ever today and are just as unique and special as the one who collects and wears them.
