INTERESTING INFO: Hector Aguilar wore many hats in his career - including Taxco Mexico resident and advocate for it's silver jewelry and tourism trades, William Spratling shop manager and first graduate of his apprenticeship program, artist, jewelry designer, silversmith, husband, historic home owner, businessman, Taller Borda business owner, and employer.
Héctor Aguilar became acquainted with William Spratling and the Taxco silver jewelry renaissance through his work as a guide bringing tourists to Taller de Las Delicias from his native Mexico City. It was on one of his many visits to Taxco that he met his wife, Louis Cartwright, and they settled in Taxco in 1937 where he became Spratlings shop manager. Two years later, and with the financial backing of friends, he purchased Casa Borda, the 18th century Colonial residence in the center of town that commanded attention, (built by José de la Borda in 1759 and owned by Don José de la Borda who made his fortune via local silver mining industry). Hector established his work shop or "taller" there and retained the historic name, Borda. Taller Borda became a huge success - due in part to their 1943 contract with the American jewelry company, Coro. At its height there were over three hundred people employed by his shop. Hector kept Taller Borda running until 1966 when he closed and enjoyed a nearly 20-year retirement.
Aguilar’s designs were heavily influence by the Art Deco and Modernist movements and well known to display his unique interpretation of pre-Columbian and Mexican motifs. His pieces focused on the manipulation of line within simple compositions and boasted clean lines and bold shapes. These candle sticks are iconic masterpieces available for you to own and enjoy for the taking
JUST FOR FUN - AI DESCRIPTION - (GENERATED BY ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE): Discover the warm glow of artisanal craftsmanship with this pair of vintage Hector Aguilar copper candle sticks. Originating from Mexico, these candleabras embody the rich cultural heritage and timeless beauty of Mexican craftsmanship. Their unique design and patina-speckled surface tell a story of authenticity and artistic dedication, making them a sophisticated addition to any decor. Each piece in this set of two carries the essence of Taxco's renowned silversmith tradition, meticulously crafted with attention to detail. Although the ownership history remains a mystery, the candles' allure is undiminished, promising to add a touch of elegance and a flickering light to your space.
CONDITION: Good vintage condition - given the age, collectibility, and rarity. I have not cleaned or polished these at all - there are remnants of old candles in the cups and some build up of dust ..... or history. One candle cup has the copper framing rim or border loose on about half of the cup and there is a small bent or downward dent in the same cup and one brass button has a small dent. All components are intact and restoration should be possible, if you feel the need. In an excellent state of preservation.
